Market Report Tuesday 4th October

An improvement in trade in the sheep shed this week, saw lambs up to 270p/kg and £147.60 to average 235p/kg. More lambs required every week! Cull ewes sold up to £159 but plenty of leaner ewes forward to return an average of £73.

Another strong trade for fat pigs with prices reaching 198p/kg with quality selling around 175p – 190p/kg.

Barren cows sold on a brisk trade with a top price of 187p/kg for a Longhorn, and average of 139.19p/kg. A small entry of clean cattle sold up to 227p/kg.

A mixed quality entry of dairies this Tuesday but trade still brisk, seeing heifers to £2620 and cows to £2500.

Another large entry of calves met a strong trade, seeing Blue bulls to £385 and heifers to £210.

A reduced entry and trade similar to other outlets with the best cows to 187p/kg for a 640kg Longhorn from R W Potter & Co, Yeaveley. A 830kg Limousin sold for 185p/kg from R & M Hunter & Sons, Hollinsclough and 182p/kg for a 690kg British Blue from J Deaville, Bucknall.

Top headage price of £1535.50 for the 830kg Limousin from R & M Hunter, with Angus’ to £1440.95 & £1366.70; Friesians to £1271.70, British Blues to £1255.80 and Holsteins to £1228.40.

CLEAN CATTLE;

A decent entry selling to 227p/kg for a 575kg Limousin bull from Home Farm, Rushton, who also sold a 720kg British Blue heifer for 218p/kg. A 560kg Angus bull realised 194p/kg for MJ & VP Oliver & Sons, Toft Green.

Other heifers at 200p/kg for a 595kg Angus from Glyn Redfern, Onecote who also sold a 595kg Angus for 191p/kg. A 565kg Angus sold for 198p/kg from S Pennington & Son, Altrincham.

A 715kg Simmental steer realised 209p/kg for B J Bailey, Biddulph Park.

Top headage price of £1569.60 for the 720kg Blue heifer with other heifers at £1190 & £1136.45, with steers to £1494.35 and bulls to £1305.25.

DAIRIES (40);

A very mixed quality forward on Tuesday however the best continue to sell exceptionally well.

Andrew Weston of Litton topped the day at £2620 for a 30kg heifer with another heifer from Derek Davenport of Sandbach close behind at £2580.

Cows peaked at £2500 for a second calver from Phillip Brocklehurst of Mobberley.

Next week we have the herd dispersal on behalf of the Hollinshead family. Robot cows, they are strong and milky. Catalogue can be viewed online.

A strong trade once again with some excellent prices achieved and buyers after quality stock. Porkers sold to 184p/kg for a pair of 71kg pigs from PJ Saunders, with 183p/kg for 68kg pigs from Alan Worth and 181p/kg for 75kg pigs from J & B Fentem.

Cutters topped at 188p/kg for 80kg pigs from J & B Fentem who sold other cutters for 183p, 182p, 171p & 170p, with Massie Farms selling up to 186p/kg for 82kg gilts. 180p/kg for 77kg pigs from P J Saunders and 176p/kg for 81kg pigs from Ray Rowlinson.

Bacon pigs sold up to 198p/kg for a pen of 86kg pigs from Ray Rowlinson, with Massie Farms selling bacon pigs at 190p, 189p, 184p, 180p, 179p (x3). 185p/kg for 86kg pigs from Bernard Minshull, who also sold a 86kg pig for 182p/kg.

One heavy pig at 110kg sold for 134p/kg from PF & PD Parsons.

Cull sows topped at 75p/kg for a 290kg sow from P J Saunders and also for a 282kg sow from S Richardson, Barnsley who sold others at 74p, 70p, 69p and 64p.

A slightly reduced entry sold on a much improved trade, in line with a firming in the national trend.

Best lambs forward topping at 270p/kg and again, the heavier weights meeting faster trade in general. Meat is very much at a premium. Top headage price of £147.60.

Overall average at 235p/kg and many more could have been sold with no detriment to trade.

A few less forward but still a good entry and again, dominated by ewes lacking flesh and showing signs of the lack of keep.

Another very big turnout of calves and like everywhere, trade is less. The best at Leek today look well sold.

59 Continental Bulls
Big numbers and trade very good for the better sorts with the top 20 all over £300 and topping at £385 for a Blue from Richard Emmott. Mediums look ok at £200 – £280 with some smaller sorts under £200 look well brought.

The heifers are very hard work to sell at present with the buyers looking for quality but some smalls look low money. Best Lims topped at £210 for a nice red calf from PF Hulse. Better sorts generally £150 – £200; mediums £90 – £130 with smalls generally £40 – £70.
