Market Report 9th November

A busy Tuesday market, and in particular in the sheep section where trade reaches another level topping at 321p/kg, with numerous pens 300p and above, to average at £118.50 per head throughout!! Cull sheep just as dear for the quality on offer with the best to £169 and average of £95.23. 

A small entry of milkers sold on a good trade with the best to £2120 for a second calver. Don’t forget next week is Pedigree day so look out for the catalogue online shortly. 

Barrens sold well to a top price of 174p/kg for an OTM steer with cows to 144p/kg. A shortage of best quality clean cattle with the exception of a smart Limousin bull at 220p/kg from Chris Barnsley. 

Calves continue to sell well meeting a large crowd of buyers, with the best Blue bull calves to £445 and £440. No smart heifers forward but the top of £220 for a Simmental. 

A packed shed of pigs this week and trade a little less as to be expected. Best pens up to 116p/kg for cutters and bacon pigs at 110p/kg. 

BARREN COWS (30);

Selling time – 10:00am

A small entry sold on a solid trade throughout with a top price of 144p/kg for a 810kg British Blue from J C Robinson, Rushton, with a 765kg Angus at 138p/kg for D & S Rogers, Chinley and a 670kg Montbeliarde at 127p/kg for Woodward Partners.

Black & white’s topped at 124p/kg for a 825kg Holstein from DJ & KL Leadbetter, Sudbury who also sold a 855kg Holstein for 124p/kg and a 685kg Holstein for a 117p/kg for W G & J Clark who also sold a 760kg and 750kg Holsteins at 115p/kg.

Overall average of 109.1p/kg or £695.25 per head.

A 600kg 34 mth old Hereford steer realised 174p/kg for K J White & Co, Swinscoe with a 760kg Hereford at 152p/kg for R Edwards, Freehay.

A 1110kg Angus bull realised 109p/kg for A P Buckle, Boundary.

Top headage price today of £1209.90 for the Angus bull with cows to £1166.40 for British Blue, £1060.20 for Holsteins at £1055.70 for Angus’ with Steers to £1155.20.

CLEAN CATTLE;

A small entry this week met a strong trade for what was on offer with the best to 220p/kg for a 605kg Limousin bull from Chris Barnsley, Morridge. Steers topped at 210p/kg for a 605kg Angus from Rushton Spencer.

Black & white bulls sold well to 192p/kg for a 545kg Friesian from J E Archer & Sons, Hilton, with another 590kg bull at 190p/kg and a 520kg bull at 186p/kg from the same home.

Heifer sold to 180p/kg for a 550kg British Blue with a 720kg Beef Shorthorn realising 170p/kg and a 705kg South Devon at 163p/kg for Mary Rowlinson.

Top headage price of £1331 for the Limousin bull, with steers to £1270.50 and heifers to £1224.

DAIRIES (32);

Selling time – 11:30am

A good trade for the best saw a second calver from A Barber of Gnosall giving 36kg reach £2120.

Good cows were in strong demand with another second calver from A Armett of West Leake to £1900.

Heifers peaked at £1920 from Messrs Easom with others from the same home at £1700.

PIGS (197);

A another packed entry of pigs this week and trade very similar. Pork pigs sold up to 95p/kg for 74kg pigs from J & B Fentem.

Cutters topped at 116p/kg for a 77kg pig from D J Pope, Thame, who also sold 79kg pigs at 110p/kg. a pair of 82kg pigs realised 114p/kg for PF & PD Parsons, with 81kg pigs at 106p/kg for J & B Fentem.

Bacon pigs sold up to 110p/kg for a pair of 90kg pigs from JA & B Minshull, Buxton, with 88kg, 98kg and 87kg pigs all at 109p/kg for Massie Farms, Stafford and a 101kg pig at 108p/kg for DJ Pope with other bacon pigs generally 90p – 105p/kg.

Heavier pigs topped at 101p/kg for a 111kg pigs from PF & PD Parson, who sold others at 94p/kg. a 111kg pig from J & B Fentem realised 94p/kg and a run of heavy pigs from W Rigby & Son sold at 90p/kg for 6 pens.

A bumper show of sows were harder to sell but the best to 44p/kg for a 260kg sow from Bernard Minshull and a 252kg sow at 40p/kg from the same home. Sows generally 25p – 35p.

BUTCHERS LAMBS (1030);

A good entry in terms of numbers but quality perhaps slightly back on last week. Trade has however found another level and almost has to be seen to be believed!!

Best lambs racing away to 321p/kg but the commercial quality lambs have seen the biggest increase in trade with them mostly 20p – 30p up on the week. Only store lambs at less than 245p/kg and nothing at all less than 230p/kg.

Big lambs in very strong demand to average £132/head for 45kg + and top headage of £165.75.

Overall average at 277p/kg SQQ or 270p/kg overall. Overall average of £118.50 per head!!

A few less about but an excellent trade, topping at £169 for Texels from John Mifflin with heavy ewes generally £125 – £150. Best Suffolks to £145 and best Mules to £122. Rams sold to £160 for Texels from Kirkham & Bourne.

Overall average for a very weathered sample at £95.23.

The best a remarkable trade with buyers looking for quality. 4 very smart calves topped £425 and topped at £445 today for a Blue from Bernard Brunt just ahead of Andrew Hulme at £440 and Chris Ball at £430 all with Blues. Daz Tudor had £425 for his Charolais with other better done calves topped £350. Mediums £240 – £300 with a few smaller sorts less.
