Market Report Tuesday 11th March

Calves are on a roll with a trio of 6-week-old British Blue Bulls all exceeding the £600 mark!! Topping the Heifers was also a British Blue at £480.

A good entry of sheep with just short of 1,000 head on offer, seeing hoggs up to 397p/kg with a top headage price of £198.80 and Ewes to £250.

Similar number of Pigs on offer to last week with a top price of 196p/kg.

The Dairy shed topped at £2700 for a stylish heifer.

BARREN COWS

Another strong trade in the Barrens with a good company of buyers around the ring leaving empty handed each week.

A Simmental weighing 575kg topped the day at 257p/kg for JH & KA Thornhill of Disley, closely followed by a British Blue, weighing 660kg, at 254p/kg for S Kidd Farmers of Longnor, to give the top headage price of the day of £1676.40/head.

A Saler cow, weighing 600kg reached 247p/kg also for S Kidd Farmers.

Two Hereford cows weighing 470kg and 670kg sold to 240p/kg and 237p/kg, both for M Beswick of Fairfield.

An overage Charolais Bull, weighing 870kg sold to 195p/kg to a top price of £1696.50 for C & EJ Whilock of Werrington.

Overall average for barrens was 227.25p/kg with a top headage price of £1676.40.

CLEAN CATTLE
A small entry of clean cattle saw a Friesian steer at 525kg sell up to 322p/kg to a top price of £1690.50 for DR & A Shuker of Bosley with another Friesian at 314p/kg, weighing 470kg for I & GE Gregson of Hanbury.

A lovely entry for a “normal” week with trade just as swift.

A very stylish Donte heifer from Ian Ellis of Chesterfield reached £2700 to Red Earth Farms who also took a second from the same home at £2560.

Eric Weston of Roston saw his heifer reach £2650 to A Myatt of Leigh with another from Edward and Dianne Bennett reach £2600, also to Red Earth Farms.

Next week is Pedigree Sale with a nice entry of milkers and youngstock already entered. Catalogues will be out in due course.

A good entry selling on a stronger trade than expected with reports elsewhere being down beat.

Best types remain very well bid for to a top of 397p/kg and plenty at 360p-380p/kg.

Big Hoggs remain harder to sell but still topping at £198.80 for overweight’s, with 145 overweight averaging £171/head.

Commercial quality good to sell providing not too heavy, generally trading at 320p-350p/kg depending on finish.

SQQ average at 333p/kg, including plenty of lean, light sorts and overall average at 328p/kg. Average headage at £151/head.

More best types could be sold each week.

Big numbers but the buyers were certainly ready for them with averages and prices miles dearer than we have ever seen them. Eleven best sold over £500 including a trio of 6-week-old British Blues from Andy Williamson at £635, £625 and £605. Andy Hulme £580, Graham Turnock £570, Andrew Cotton £555 and £545 and Peter Gilman £530, the list goes on! Medium bulls £400-£500 with smaller sorts under £400.
