Market Report Tuesday 18th March

Calves still an absolute flying trade with a record high of £760 for a British Blue bull and British Blue heifers topping at £495!

Less numbers around in the sheep shed today but trade still strong with hoggs topping at 418p/kg. Ewes were in demand and topped at £282 but more needed to meet demand. Tups were the trade of the day, reaching £266.

Competitive bidding in the Barrens, reaching 275p/kg for a 695kg Sussex X with a top headage price of £2122.65 for a Black & White cow.

The Pedigree Sale in the Dairies topped at £2900 twice for second calvers.

An even faster trade with strong bidding on all.

Top price for cows was 275p/kg for a 695kg Sussex X from JM Robinson of Swythamley to gross £1911.25.

The heaviest cow of the day, a Black & White, from JW Campbell of Cheadle, achieved 267p/kg at 795kg to gross £2122.65.

Another 720kg Black & White cow from J Kirkham of Sutton, sold for 267kg also and a 775kg Black & White from DR & A Shuker & Sons of Bosley achieved 259p/kg to gross £2007.25.

CLEAN CATTLE
Only two small unfinished cattle in which were strongly bid for and achieved up to 210p/kg for a 255kg Dairy Shorthorn bull and 191p/kg for a 250kg Dairy Shorthorn heifer.

Buyers are in attendance for well finished cattle every week.

Less numbers about and trade holds firmer. Gilts 190p+ and boars 165p+, best gilts topped at 201p for J&B Minshull.

Cutters sold to 94p for J&B Fentem who had others to 192p, 191p, 190p, 168p, 166p, 164p. J Ball to 171p.

Baconers sold to 201p for J&B Minshull, S Bailey to 200p & 190p, Massie Farms to 197p, 196p, 194p, 192p. B Plalfryman to 194p. J Ball to 193p. J&B Fentem to 193p, 192p.

A Clean gilt from C Hine to 92p.

Dairies to £2900 X 2
Trade for milkers was just as swift on Tuesday at the March Pedigree Sale which saw the best reach £2900 twice over, both from the Broomhouse Herd of Messrs Easom. Both second calvers and giving 48kg and 44kg they caught the eye of Peter Wilson of Blithbury who clinched them both.

Other second calvers from the Phillips Family of Winkhill reached £2780.

Heifers topped at £2880 for a Rubels daughter from the Cotton Family of Whiston to A Moseley of Cheddleton. They also had a second to £2750.

Young calves sold well, topping at £440 from JJ Furness of Elton, Matlock.

A smaller entry which is probably helpful with slower demand nationally.

Trade in Leek however remarkably upbeat for the majority of hoggs forward and the heavy weights dearer on the week to a top of 418p/kg and multiple lots at 380p and better.

Heavy weights hard to place and plenty at 300-310p/kg, hopefully that will improve over the next week or two.

SQQ average at 344p/kg and overall 329p/kg.

Buyers crying out for calves and having to pay a big price to secure them. Two topped £700 today with a record high at Leek of £760 for an Andy Williamson special and Andrew Hulme close behind at £725. Eight more better sorts £560-£630, medium bulls £380-£440 with a few smaller bulls under £350.
