Market Report Tuesday 1st October

With October upon us, trade remains strong with plenty of stock on offer.

Dairies up to £3000, Lambs to 340p/kg, Pigs to 208p/kg, Barrens to 187p/kg and calves up to £455.

BARREN COWS (37)
Selling time – 10:00am

A pleasing entry, seeing a very similar strong trade up to 187p/kg for an 825kg Charolais cow for Messrs Sykes of Rainow to gross £1542.75.
A 725kg Shorthorn cow from SJ Hooley of Macclesfield sold for 178p/kg with a 575kg Holstein, for W E Turnock & Sons, at 177p/kg.
Another Black & White cow, weighing 790kg, for W, A & DW Carbutt of Siddington, achieved 175p/kg with a 685kg cow from the same vendor at 172p/kg.
A 650kg Limousin stock bull was bid for keenly and realised 181p/kg to gross £1176.50.

An 800kg, 45-month-old Hereford bull, from N F Hill, realised 189p/kg to gross £1512.00.

CLEAN CATTLE
An entry of 5 Friesian bulls from J E Archer & Sons of Hilton met a good demand, seeing a top price of 246p/kg for a 500kg bull with 239p/kg being paid for another 500kg bull.
A 640kg Aberdeen Angus steer, from B J Bailey of Biddulph Park, achieved 230p/kg to gross £1472.

Top headage price for young bulls was £1230.

Another strong entry of pigs today with a good show of quality pigs forward. Top price for fat pigs 208p, better gilts generally 195-205p and boars 10p less. sows topped at 102p.

Cutters sold to 202p for J&B Fentem who had others at 201p and 200px2.

A good show of bacon pigs sold to 208p for Bernard Minshull who had boars to 193p. PF+PD Parsons had a run to 205p, 204p, 202p, 201p for gilts and boars to 191p. Massie Farms sold to 204p, 202p, 201p and 200p.

Heavies sold to 165p for 120kg gilts from Wythenshawe Community Farm, Stockport. who had another 142kg pig to 120p. R Brough had a 118kg gilt to 144p.

Sows sold to 102p or £252.96 for Wythenshawe Community Farm, R Brough had a 164kg sow to 96p.

Dairies to £3000
17 Over £2000

A really good entry of milkers on Tuesday met a fantastic trade peaking at £3000 for a very powerful heifer from David Brailsford of Chesterfield.
Close behind at £2950 was a sweet heifer from the Broadley family of Brucdcliffe, who saw their second heifer reach £2600.
The Easom’s of Oakerthorpe saw thei third calver reach £2480 with a lovely run of four heifers making £2460, £2400 x 2 and £2220.
In all, 17 passed the £2000 mark with all milkers including some with detriments, averaging £1962.
Calves peaked at £290 from Red Earth Farms.
Plenty going on in the dairy shed over the forthcoming weeks, including the herd dispersal on behalf of the Shuker Family, see below.

A reduced entry after an awful day and nights weather saw a sharper trade for all types.

Best lambs selling to 340p/kg and plenty at 300p and better.

Best big lambs grossing £169.13.

Overall average at 276p/kg for a sample including a lot of ‘weathered’ types

A few less ewes about with a lot of grazing ewes on offer. Top price £177 for ewes from the Greasley Family, Keddleston. A lack of well meated continental types forward today with planer ewes forward.
