A very successful day today in Leek with 100% clearance over every section

The Pedigree Dairy Sale was off to a flyer with a top price of £3280 for a superb heifer from Eric Weston with four over the £3000 mark

Calves sold well with 148 on offer and plenty of buyers around the ring to take them home, seeing a top price of £438 for a British Blue bull

Similar entry of Lambs as last week with over 1000 head on offer, seeing a top price of 333p/kg but with a lot of smaller sorts in the entry bringing down the average

Pigs were on a solid trade, topping at 231p and the averages for heavy pigs at £201.81/head

A good company of buyers around the ring with once again not enough cattle to fulfil their requirements.

Selling on a firm trade with a top price of 197p/kg for a Shorthorn cow weighing 750kg for G G Hall & Son of Croxden, closely followed by a Limousin weighing 705kg for DA & LM Moss of Rushton Spencer at 180p/kg.

Top headage price of the day was £1477.50 for the Shorthorn from G G Hall & Son.

Pigs a solid trade once again topping at 231p. Nothing in spec below 194p today which is very pleasing, the averages do speak for themselves.

Porkers topped at 231p from C Hine. J&B Fentem to 226p, 217p, 210p.

Cutters sold to 225p from J&B Fentem, who had others to 220p, 219p x3. JG Belfield sold to 224p. S Bailey to 210p.

Bacon pigs sold to 222p from Massie Farms who had others to 221p, 220p 219p. JA&B Minshull to 219p. J&B Fentem to 218p. Ben Vernon had boars to 215p.

Heavies sold to 200p for JG Belfield. Who had a 116kg boar to 187p. S J Hitchcock had 120kg gilts to 171p, and 170p.

Four Over £3000

35 Milkers (all in) averaged £2410

The monthly pedigree sale attracted a substantial entry of 46 head of quality cattle to the Leek sale. The quality this month was very high with some lovely cows on offer.

Nine cows in milk averaged a superb £2470 and topped at £3180 for a second calf cow by Peter Smudge from Messrs Easom & Sons. Giving 43lts she was knocked down to a regular Cheshire purchaser who took the stablemate also at £2700.

The very first cow in the ring made £2780 for Messrs Mellor, Earl Sterndale. This third calver was giving 50lts and sold into Derbyshire.

26 Heifers averaged a remarkable £2390 (all in) with only 3 failing to make £2000 including the best 3 over £3000.

Top of the shop was a superb 2-year-old heifer from the Shieldhouse herd of Eric Weston at Roster. This Heifer, giving 36kg sold for £3280 to Andrew Hulme, Basford.

The biggest vendor of the day was Michael Wainwright, Sterndale who sold 9 fresh heifers. He had two in the £3000 club at £3120 and £3020 for strong posh heifers, both giving over 30lts and selling to two Staffordshire purchasers.

One close calving heifer from Richard Lomas changed hands at £2880, due in September to Aberdeen Angus.

The day concluded with a young pedigree Limousin bull, from Malcolm Bennett at Stockport, just rising 18 months he sold for £2950 to a Derbyshire suckled calf producer.

Leek has again showed it is the place to sell quality replacement heifers.

A similar entry forward and a two-tier trade, with the best good to sell but the lean and light lambs continue to be harder to place and being sold for further feeding.

Best to 333p/kg and plenty of better end at 320p and better.

Best big lambs to £168.97 and plenty at £150 and better.

Overall average at 298p/kg for a very mixed sample.

More hill types and plain ewes forward today lacking well fed continental types.

Top price £181 for Texels from Eamon Vaughan, Newcastle, who had others to £174. Ian Archer sold to £155, Ian Gregorey to £153 and JM Robinson to £150.

Mules topped at £128 plain mules £95-£105.

Feeding ewes £70-£80.

Overall Average £103.50
