Market Report Tuesday 21st April

The sun was shining in Leek this week with the Pedigree Dairy Sale in full swing, seeing a top price of £3980 for a red & white heifer.

Calves saw a wonderful trade throughout with Limousin and British Blue bulls both topping at £970 and Limousin heifers to £710.

Spring Lambs topped at 560p/kg or £224/head
Hoggs to 482p/kg or £213.28/head
Ewes to £310/head.

Solid trade in the pig shed with 194 on offer, topping at 223p/kg for bacon pigs.

A high proportion of Black & White cows in the barren shed today, seeing a top headage price of £2053.20 for a Holstein cow weighing 870kg which sold to 236p/kg for R & T Clowes & Son of Dilhorne.

Top price was 241p/kg for a Holstein weighing 815kg to gross £1964.15 for BP & JR Needham of Heaton.

A small entry today with Friesian bulls selling to 228p/kg, weighing 460kg, to gross £1048.80 for DJ H & T Walker of Ashbourne.

The overall average for clean cattle was 222.31p/kg or £861.45/head.

Electric Trade at Leek Pedigree Sale to Top of £3980

Trade was alight at the April Pedigree Sale at Leek, topping at £3980 with all milkers averaging a superb £2638.

Leading the day was a beautiful red and white heifer from the Critchlow family of Cubley. By Batenburg G Stellando, she was sold giving 33kg and went to N J Dairy at Rugeley.

Next in line was a very sweet heifer from the Ellis family of Ashover at £3550 who went to a regular purchaser.

A tremendous run of four heifers from the Flower family of Friden topped at £3500 to average an excellent £3268.

The Weston family of Roston also had a tremendous trade for their run of four heifers topping at £3480 and averaging £3320.

In-calf heifers topped at £3250 for a very well-bred heifer from Ron Tomkinson at Leek. Boasting 8 gens VG/EX she went to the Ellis family of Chesterfield.

Young calves were keenly sought after topping at £500 for registered Holsteins from Messrs Bradbury and the run of Norwegian X from Messrs Parkes of Melton Mowbray reaching £480.

A few more numbers coming slowly with trade solid but not spectacular.

Best lambs to 560p/kg from Rob and Andy Williamson and best big lambs up to £224/head from the same vendor.

Best lambs generally 500p and better and commercial sorts around 430p – 460p/kg.

Overall average at 471p/kg or £186/head.

More wanted weekly as buyers look to switch over.

Over 60% of the entry fell outside the SQQ range!!!

Averages looking good given the entry at 410p SQQ and 370p overall, including 150 hoggs at 52kg plus.

More handy weight hoggs could be sold to vendor’s advantage.

A wonderful trade right through in the calf shed today and more could have easily been sold. Trade topping at £970 twice for a Limousin and Blue bull and Limousin heifers to £710.

Generally, a very nice show and fantastic to sell with plenty of buyers forward to top at £970 twice for a Limousin from K W Cresswell and a Blue bull from Andy Williamson. Top ten over £705, half over £600 and nothing below £300. Again, many more could have been sold to vendor’s advantage.
