Calves are on a roll, setting a new record for Leek was a British Blue bull which topped at £640 with a British Blue heifer reaching £490!

An exceptional trade in the Barren section with Black & White cows topping at 298p/kg and a top headage price of £1922, more cows needed to meet demand.

Over 1200 head of sheep on offer with Hoggs topping at 442p/kg and a top headage price of £211.20 and Ewes topping at £265/head.

Top in the Dairy shed was £2580 for an in-milk heifer and an entry of dairy calves gained plenty of interest to top at £440.

BARREN COWS

A similar entry sold on an exceptional trade. Best Black & White cows to 298p/kg from W, A & PW Carbutt, Siddington, and top headage at £1922, again for a Black & White cow from CS Hooley, Pexhill.

Best dairy cows 270p/kg and better with plenty of others at 230p-270p/kg and plenty of meated cows at £1700-£1900/head. Bottom book is a herd worked, lightweight cow, still grossing over £1000.

More cows could be sold each week to the vendors advantage with an increasingly competitive ring of buyers.

Overall average at 230p/kg or £1540/head for almost all black & White cows this week.

CLEAN CATTLE

A small entry selling very well. A Dairy bred Limousin heifer sold to 327p/kg from TW & CM White, Shottle to gross £1733.

A Dairy heifer from R E Poyser sold to 292p/kg to gross £1474.60.

More could be sold each week.

More pigs about this week and trade on the whole very similar,perhaps a touch less. Gilts generally 190p+ boars 165p+. Overweight and under finished pigs 120p -150p. fats to 198p and Sows a flyer to 89p more sows and big gilts required each week.

Cutters sold to 195p for R Rowlsinon, Ramshorn. J&B Fentem to 192p, B Mushull to 187p, S Bailey to 168p.

Bacon pigs to 198p for PF+PD Parsons who had others to 194p, 192p. Massie Farms to 196p, 195p, 194p x2. J&B Fentem to 192p, 187p, 186p, 185p. B Minshull to 187p. M Fradley to 185p 170p. C Hine to 185p, M Banham to 183p.

Clean gilts to 97p, 93p and 91p for Massie farms for 198kg to 212kg gilts.

Sows sold to 89p for M Fradely, R Rowlisnon to 81p, S Bailey to 72p, A Worth to 40p.

In-Milk Heifers to £2580

Dairy Calves to £460

A good day post pedigree sale and a feature of the sale were a group of 25-day old well-bred heifer calves.

In the milkers, top place went to a stylish newly calved 26-month-old home bred heifer from Frank Cookson at Agden Brook who had 3 heifers over £2200.

Plenty of customers for all categories with a real variety from Montbeliarde through to Friesians and pedigree Holsteins.

A third of the entry over £2200 and more needed to fulfil demand with Mr Cookson topping at £2580.

As detailed, the heifer calves created a good deal of interest to a top of £440 for the Furness Partnership at Elton with a 21-day old heifer.

Montbeliarde heifers to £2500 for the Smith’s at Quarndon, Derbyshire.

Best three heifer calves averaged £418 with the best seven in-milk heifers averaging £2474.

A date for the diary is the up-and-coming herd dispersal on behalf of the Wellwood family. Nearly all fresh it is not one to miss.

A good entry of Hoggs sold on a solid trade with an SQQ average of 345p and 341p overall. Average headage of £155/head, including plenty of lightweight sorts.

Best Hoggs raced away to 442p/kg and plenty of well-shaped, well fleshed hoggs at 370p/kg and better.

Best big hoggs at £211.20/head and plenty at £160-£190/head.
