Market Report Tuesday 25th July

A quiet day in Leek today saw a slight dip in trade.

Dairies, 51 on offer today, reaching a top price of £2300 for a third time calver, giving 55kg to L Neville of Tansley.

Lambs, we saw a smaller entry today, probably as a result of the recent wet weather, best price at 289p/kg and a top headage of £142.80 for big lambs.

Pigs, smaller numbers again this week with Porkers topping at 242p/kg for 70kg pigs from EA Cooper, Taddington.

Calves saw a slight dip in numbers with 120 sold, Native bred Heifers best sold on the day.

Barren cows topped at 164p/kg for MM & CJ Sutton, Longsdon and GG Hall & Son, Croxden.

A smaller selection on offer today with more numbers needed.

164p/kg was realised for a 635kg Friesian for MM & CJ Sutton of Longsdon, a 685kg and a 640kg Shorthorn for GG Hall & Son, Croxden.

A 695kg Hereford sold at 160p to G Goodwin, Wetley Rocks and a 720kg Holstien realised 158p/kg for WE Turnock, Onecote.

Other top prices include 155p, 152p X 2, 149p and 145p.

An overall average of 141p/kg or £875/head.

CLEAN CATTLE;

A 650kg Simmental Heifer realised 258p/kg, £1677/head from Home Farm, Rushton with an Aberdeen Angus from the same vendor reaching 203p/kg. NA Bonsall, Stanshope reached 220p/kg and 196p/kg for Shorthorn Steers whilst a 480kg Aberdeen Angus Heifer reached 197p/kg for D & EA Jeffery, Roston.

Fats remain a serious trade perhaps slightly less than last week but none the less a serious trade topping at 242p/kg, a few plainer types on offer today reflected in the averages. Sows a serios trade topping at 136p/kg.

Porkers a serious trade topping at 242p/kg for 70kg pigs from EA Cooper, Taddington. J&B Fentem had pigs to 234 and 229p/kg.

Cutting Pigs topped at 235p/kg for 77kg pigs from J&B Fentem. Who has others to 230p/kg. JR Mosedale, Long Lane saw 224p/kg for 80kg pigs.

Bacon Pigs topped at 230p/kg x3 from JG Belfield, Sheen & Massie Farms, Stafford. Massie farms had pigs to 229, 228 227, 226×2, 225×3. MC&E Beattie, Allstock saw 229, 228×2 & 227.

Heavies topped at 208p/kg for 110kg pigs from EA Cooper. R Wilson, Hollington saw 158p/kg, 130p/kg for 106 and 110kg pigs.

A 153kg heavy clean gilt from R Watson Chester topped at 138p/kg.

Sows were in good demand best sorts to 136p/kg from A Worth, Marton, leaner sorts 60-80p/kg.

2 pens of stores achieved £60 for Duroc x and £34 for 12kg white weaners.

THIRD CALVER TO £2300

After a fantastic trade last week things were a little easier with the dry weather no doubt taking some buyers out of the equation.

The Easom family of Oakerthorpe topped the day at £2300 for a third calver giving 55kg to L Neville of Tansley.

Close behind at £2260 was a heifer from Phillip & Marilyn Critchlow of Cubley also going to the same home.

Stock Bulls from the Bennett family of Stockport sold well with a Pedigree Limousin to £3850 and a British Blue X Limousin Bull to £2380.

Next week we have the Dispersal of 102 Holsteins on behalf of Messrs Sherwin of Sproston. Plenty of choice to go at!

A smaller entry after an awful few days of weather saw a reduced trade, in line with expectations.

Best lambs today at 275p plus, to a top of 289p/kg and a top headage of £142.80 for big lambs.

Commercial quality lambs dominated the entry, selling at 245-260p depending on weight and finish.

Overall average at 265.5p/kg or £108.28
