Market Report Tuesday 27th February

A cold start to the day today but a very pleasing trade in most areas.

A very pleasing entry of sheep today with over 1500 head on offer in total, seeing a good trade throughout with Hoggs topping at 370p/kg or £200/head.

Increased entry of Calves this week with a British Blue taking the top spot at £500 from Halton Farms of Astbury.

Slightly increased entry in the Pigs, seeing a similar trade to last week with Baconers topping at 180p/kg.

A smaller entry in the Dairy shed in comparison to last week’s Pedigree Sale but a top price of £2020 for Holstein Heifers from Ian Ellis. More Could easily have been sold.

 

BARREN COWS (19)

Selling time – 10:00am

A small entry but a very firm trade, seeing a top price of 196p/kg for a 690kg Holstein from W Salt & Son of Denstone. A 635kg Holstein from, RJ Clowes & Sons, achieved 184p/kg and an 815kg Friesian, 180p/kg from RG & AS Williamson.

Top headage price was £1467.00 for a Black & White with others up to £1453.50 and £1452.00.

A small entry of Holstein Heifers seeing up to 197p/kg at 710kg to gross £1398.70.

 

PIGS (90)

Selling time – 9:15am

An increased entry met with a similar trade, on the whole pigs would be similar to last week with a few plainer sorts in the mix. 

Cutters topped at 168p from R Brough who had others to 164p and 165p from JG Belfield.

Bacon pigs topped at 180p from R Brough, PF+PD Parsons saw 164p and 160p. J&B Fentem
to 164p and 163p.

DAIRIES (22)

A full range on offer this week but considerably less numbers following last weeks Pedigree Sale.

Trade good and several potential purchasers left the ring unable to fulfil their orders.

Top call £2020 (twice) for homebred pedigree Holstein heifers from the Ashover Herd of Ian Ellis, both leading animals were giving up to 27kg and both went to Mr
Peter Stone of Little Stoke.

A regular exhibitor, Andrew Mills, topped at £1970 with other strong heifers £1800 and £1900.

Flekvieh crossbred young cows to £1660 with other cows to £1440.

In the youngstock, heifer calves, around 30 days, to £180 with British Friesian heifers, free of the bull, to £1270 at 23 months old and £1255 at 22 months.

HOGGETS (1188)

A considerably larger entry of Hoggs today with the best sorts reaching 370p/kg for D Machin of Rudyard and FS & MJ Heath of Pipe Gate and topping at just over £200/head for D Williams of Basford.

A very pleasing overall average of 322p/kg or £139.09/head, very similar to last week but understandable given the size of the entry and quite a number of smaller sorts being offered.

A solid entry with a real mix on offer, a good proportion of lean mules and hill types on offer. Top price £180 for Josh Philips for Texels.

The top 14 pens all over £150+. Best heavy mules to £120, plain mules £70-80, leaner sorts £55-£65.

A pleasing overall average of £96.22/head

Best Rams to £180 from Ian Archer, overall average £132.40

Better numbers across the board as the buyers come out looking for calves to rear.

Double the numbers of last week and some very nice calves in the entry. Eleven best calves topped £350 with a tremendous rush of four British Blues, from Halton
Farms of Astbury, winning the day at £500, £495, £400 and £395.Medium bulls £250-£320 with smaller or younger calves under £250.
