A busy Tuesday at Leek for the last day of January with 177 Cattle and 1049 sheep entered.
Barren cows a strong trade seeing the best to 200p/kg and £1542.75 per head. More required each week!!
Hoggs saw a varied trade and prices up and down depending on quality. Top price of 278p/kg and £139.92 per head with an overall average of 232.3p/kg. Cull sheep continue to sell well, seeing top prices of £175 and average of 91.28/head.
Dairies in short supply, saw the best cows to £2280 and heifers to £2160.
An uplift in prices for fat pigs this week, with an additional buyer seeing prices back over £2 to 206p/kg for bacon pigs.
A mixed show of calves this week, but the best quality a good price up to £442 for British Blue bulls and heifers to £295.

A good entry sold on a strong trade seeing the best to 200p/kg for a 615kg British Blue from D J Haynes, Stone and a 610kg Hereford at 191p/kg. A 825kg Hereford realised 187p/kg for A Turnock & Sons, Horton. A 585kg Fleckvieh sold for 190p/kg from Stapleton Farm Services Ltd and a 715kg Angus sold for 184p/kg from Home Farm, Rushton.

A 1145kg Hereford bull sold for 153p/kg to gross £1751.85 from C W Prime, Dilhorne.

DAIRIES TO £2280
Another tremendous trade for Dairies in a day when quality was in short supply.
A powerful second calver from the Darwin family of Oxspring, Sheffield topped the day at £2280. Giving 32kg she went to John Bayley of Nuneaton.
Heifers peaked at £2160 from Andrew Armett of West Leake, Leicester also to J Bayley with a second from the same home reaching £2000.
Aged cows were in demand with 4th-6th Calvers repeatedly hitting between £1500-£1700.

A much improved trade today top price 206p/kg for 86kg pigs from JA & B Minshull, Buxton. Averages up 20p/kg on the week. Sows in demand topping at 72p/kg.
Porkers topped at 183p/kg for a 67kg pig from MR Banham, Bromsgrove, who had others to 166p/kg. DH & J Poulson, Llangadog had 68kg pigs to 169p/kg,
Cutters sold to 191p/kg for an 83kg pig from MR Banham, Bromsgrove. DH & J Poulson had 81kg pigs to 190p/kg and 85kg pigs to 172p/kg. J & B Minshull, Buxton had a 78kg pig to 187p/kg, others from the same home realised 185p/kg & 184p/kg for 78kg and 82kg pigs.
Bacon Pigs topped at 206p/kg for 86kg pigs from JA & B Minshull, Buxton, others to 180p/kg from the same home. MR Banham, Bromsgrove saw 192p/kg for 89kg pigs and 186p/kg for 89kg pigs. J & B Fentem Allsop en-le Dale had 88kg pigs to 188p/kg
Just the one heavy pig weighing 111kg realised 174p/kg from DH & J Poulson, Llangadog.
Well meated sows met with strong demand topping at 72p/kg for a 157kg sow from PJ Barker, Charnwood. C Hine, Biddulph had a 278kg sow to 70p/kg.
One cull boar sold to 40p/kg for a 180kg boar from DH & J Poulson, Llangadog.
6 store pigs from C Wardle, Elworth realised £35/head.

A reasonable entry saw a steady but solid trade. Demand nationally is sluggish and results from today vary from 215-235p generally so overall average of 232p/kg looks very respectable.
Best lambs still wanted and well bid for topping at 280p/kg and numerous pens at 260p and better. There is however a good proportion of very plain sorts and in places these struggled to reach 200p/kg.
Big lambs still adding up well to a top of £139.92/head from Alan Wilshaw.

4 very smart Blues topped £380 and topped at £442 for a posh (33 days) sort from Sheila McCleavy, Grindley who’s other made £385. Andy Williamson had £415 for his best while Messrs Handford had £380 for their only Blue. Mediums calves £200 – £290 with smaller or plainer bulls under £200 but look well sold.
