Market Report Tuesday 4th February

Leek Market seems like the place to be!!

Trade is booming with Dairies topping at £3300, a British Blue bull Calf achieving £595, followed closely by a British Blue heifer at £540, Barrens up to 234p/kg or £2164.50/head and Lambs up to 383p/kg to top at £203/head.

A tremendous trade throughout with an overall average of 199.75p/kg for all the cows, including the plainer and small cows and £1355.38 per head.

Top price of the day was a Dutch bred Holstein from David Moseley which weighed 925kg and realised 234p/kg to gross £2164.50, which was a new record for the market for a Holstein foreign bred cow.

A Charolais cow, from R & M Hunter of Quarnford achieved 229p/kg weighing 745kg with another 740kg Charolais, from the same vendor, at 225p/kg.

A British Blue X cow from DA & LM Moss, weighing 680kg, achieved 215p/kg.

CLEAN CATTLE
A neat 570kg Limousin heifer from James Gilman of Bosley exchanged hands for 324p/kg with a 545kg Holstein heifer at 217p/kg.

More pigs on offer this week, prices very much similar to last week gilts – 190p+ boars 170p+. top price on the day 196p for fats and 78p for sows.

Milkers on Fire!!
Top of £3300 average £2226

Trade for milkers shifted up another gear entirely on Tuesday with many more needed to satisfy the demand.

A packed ring of buyers set about the entry like they really meant it with the first through the ring tipping past the £2500 mark.

Topping the day with a Mingus Daughter was the Stubbs family of Tissington, giving 32kg she topped at £3300 to the Torr family of Tissington.

A cracking Fitz Daughter from the Wayne family of Ible reached £2920 to Messrs Heath of Leek. They also saw their second calver reach £2380 to Lovatt & Jackson.

The Phillips family of Winkhill had a lovely run of three heifers in to reach £2800, £2550 and £2340, all to different purchasers. Similarly, the Brassingtons of Wolverhampton had three heifers to £2600, £2550 and £2300.

The whole entry averaged a superb £2226.

A good entry, selling on a fast trade with best shaped lambs very well bid for and commercial lambs also good to sell provided they were meat.

Best fly away to 383p/kg from Robert and Andy Williamson and other best lambs generally 350p/kg and better.

Best big lambs over £180/head to top at £203.

A smaller entry today with a real mix of ewes on offer, meated ewes very much in demand with not as many powerful pure ewes forward, small ewes and hill types a good trade on the day but all at a price.

Top price on the day £239 for a pen of texels from Roger Bailey. David Williams to £210, £195, £186, & £180. Dave Goldtsraw to £197 & £190 x3. F J Gould to £196. A Williams to £195 x2. R J Lowe to £192. WE Turnock to £190 x2

Look at the averages and top prices. Quite unreal the level of trade with even the last calf in the ring at £452. Two stronger British Blues (10 wks), for Rob Lawley, made £595 and £565 with fresh calves from Mark Hodgkinson at £490 and £465. Only one Continental bull under £300.
