Market Report Tuesday 6th June

A busy sale for the beginning of June with 1357 sheep, 233 and 119 pigs forward. Twice the number of Lambs this week as the season starts to take hold with prices well inline with other outlet seeing the best to 380p and £176.90. Still good numbers of hoggs about with the best to 316p/kg and £198.66. Cull ewes in good demand topping at £191.

Demand for fat pigs goes from strength to strength with some excellent prices achieved with the best to 234p/kg.

Barren cattle continue to sell on a strong trade, with the best today to 213p/kg and £1545.60 a head.

Dairies sold on a mixed trade seeing a fourth calver to £2000 and heifers to £1940.

Calves are on fire yet again, and more buyers appearing each week! The best bull calves to £440 and heifers to £330.

A similar entry selling on a good trade, with a 670kg Beef Shorthorn topping to day at 213p/kg from N A Bonsall, Stanshope, with a 630kg Beef Shorthorn realising 193p/kg from G G Hall & Son, Croxden and Limousin’s to 193p/kg for a 585kg cow from H G Nutter, Grindon.

A OTM Beef Shorthorn steer weighing 740kg sold for 217p/kg from N A Bonsall to realise £1605.80.

Trade remains on fire once again and long may it continue. Fats averaged over 200p/kg for all sections, topping at 234p/kg for the best gilts, boars to 220p/kg . Sows dearer on the week topping at 98p/kg.

Just the one 73kg porker achieved 229p/kg from J&B Fentem, Allsop en-le Dale.

Cutting pigs topped at 230p/kg from J&B Fentem for 77kg pigs others from the same home to 229p, 228×3, 219, 217 & 215. 83kg pigs from N Turner, Kidderminster topped at 228p/kg. Boars to 216p/kg.

Baconers topped at 234p/kg from R Watson, Frosham for a 92kg pig. Massie Farms, Stafford topped at 233p/kg x2 for 90kg & 93kg pigs, others from the same home to 231p/kg, 230p/kg x3. JA &B Minhsull, Buxton had a pair of 97kg gilts to 230p/kg. Boars to 220p/kg. A few plainer pig on offer are reflected in the averages, Those best pigs 228p/kg+.

Hevaies were a more boyant trade with 110kg pigs to 216p/kg from D Goldstraw, Meerbrook.

Sow trade had an uplift topping at 98p/kg for a 192kg sow from S Bailey, Kypersely. R Rowlinson, Ramshorn had a 268kg sow to 98p/kg.

Another week of a bouncy trade where yet again more numbers are needed to satisfy demand.

All classes were keenly sought after with cows topping at £2000 for a second calver from Messrs Darwin of Oxspring. Close behind at £1930 for a 40kg fourth calver from the Needham family of Rushton who topped the heifers at £1940.

Young calves topped at £310 for a Dairy Shorthorn x with bullers topping at £900 also for a Shorthorn.

The biggest entry so far this year saw trade less than the previous but comparing well to other markets on the same day. The overall average still at 333p/kg or £137.30/head.

Best lambs well bid for at 380p/kg and the best generally 360p and better. Best heavies grossing £176.90.

46 Continental Bulls
The best dear but all calves look well sold at present with some medium bulls looking miles better sold than they were in February/March. 4 good bulls topped £400 from four different vendors with two at £440 for Blues from Andrew Hulme and Simmentals from Alan Williamson. Peter Gilman has £425 and £400 for John Goldstraw, both with Blues. 12 best topped £350. Mediums generally £250 – £320 with a few smalls under £200.
