Market Report Tuesday 8th April

Just short of 1,000 head of sheep on offer with 100% clearance. Hoggs topped at 416p/kg, seeing a top headage price of £183.15 with Ewes topping at £225/head.

Calves still a roaring trade with a British Blue bull roaring away to £710 and a Charolais heifer reaching £670, plenty more could be sold to meet buyer demand.

Quieter day in the dairies, top price achieved was £2030 for a second calver Ayrshire.

Top price for barrens was 308p/kg with a top headage price of £2102.40

BARREN COWS & BULLS (24)

A similar entry and another strong trade for all types.

Top price was 308p/kg for a 455kg Friesian for DR & A Shuker & Sons of Bosley with a Limousin X 720kg cow for R & L Vernon of Rocester being well sold for 292p/kg to gross £2102.40.

A Brown Swiss at 720kg, from JC & D Hudson of Hollinsclough achieved 274p/kg to gross £1972.80.

An 800kg Holstein cow from WE Turnock & Sons of Onecote sold for 274p/kg to gross £2192 with a 655kg Simmental X achieving 269p/kg from Waller Farms Ltd, another Brown Swiss at 600kg also sold for 269p/kg and a 520kg lean Hereford cow was particularly well sold at 239p/kg.

Overall average 231.21p/kg and £1287.54 including a high number of smaller, leaner cows.

An 840kg Friesian Bull for TC Sykes of Macclesfield achieved 289p/kg to gross £2427.60.

CLEAN CATTLE
A 454kg lean Friesian heifer sold to 236p/kg to gross £909.40.

Trade a bit sparkier for pigs this week, top price 203p for Massie farms, gilts 190-203p, boars 165-170p.

Porkers sold to 194p for J&B Fentem, who had boars to 170p.

Cutters sold to 167p & 165p for J&B Fentem.

Bacon pigs sold to 203p, 202p, 201p, 200px2 for Massie Farms, JA&B Minshull to 200p, J&B Fentem to 199p, 198p, 195p x2. PF+PD Parsons sold to 199p, C Hine to 194p, 191p.

One heavy 115kg boar sold to 140p for PF+PD Parsons.

Sows a flying trade with good sows forward, top price 108p for a nice sow from PF+PD Parsons who had others to 87p, 71p. JA&B Minshull sold to 106p for a nice young sow, S Bailey to 100p, R Rowlinson to 89p, C Hine to 70p.

A small entry this week with in-calf heifers, Shorthorn and Friesian types, in the shed.

Top call £2030 for the Needhams at Ipstones for a Pedigree Ayrshire 2nd calver sold giving 27kg.

A smart dairy Shorthorn heifer, sold giving 20kg, sold well at £1900 from the Kirkham Family.

David Brailsford at Chesterfield showed his Honeycroft heifer, born January ’22, sold in-calf to Aberdeen Angus at £1980 to a local Leek purchaser.

With an anticipated entry of over 140 head next week on behalf of David Wrench from Marton who is retiring off the farm with his machinery dispersal on farm already scheduled for late April.

Best flying away to 416p/kg and plenty at 370p – 410p.

Big weights continue to be hard to place with 52kg plus averaging 286p/kg or £160/head for 170 head.

Top headage of £183.15.

SQQ average at 335p/kg and 318p overall or £147/head.
