Store & Breeding Sheep Sale Report 27th November

A very inclement day with heavy snow falling which depleted the entry with a total of 2,420 Store and Breeding Sheep being presented for sale. There was a good company of buyers for all types of sheep with a very strong trade for store lambs to produce an average of £96.27 throughout.

Store Lambs (2262);
Top price of the day was £141 paid for a Texel x store lamb from Will Tomkinson of Calwich with other Texels from David Naylor of Glossop of £126 and £125 from J Phillips of Buxton, £122.60 from P & M Hayward & Sons of Slack Hall Farm, £117.50 again from Mr Tomkinson and also from W E Turnock & Sons of Onecote, £114.50 from J & L Potts of Macclesfield. There were several other pens around £110 a head and more with Charollais lambs from Clive Grindey of Adlington up to £129 and £114 with Cheviot x lambs from R Bassett & Sons of Hulme End at £119.50 and Beltex lambs from N & AG Eardley of Macclesfield at £119.

Suffolk lambs from Graham Sidebottom of Marple Bridge sold up to £124.50, £111.50 from W E Turnock & Sons of Onecote, with other Suffolks from P & M Hayward of Slack Hall Farm at £110 and £109 for a pen of 56 from Joe Peach of Warslow.

Other breeds sold up to £97 for Herdwick x Texel lambs from J Booth of Congleton; Zwartbles up to £96 from P H Yeomans of Ashbourne; Lleyn lambs from M G Davenport of Leekbrook up to £93; Gritstone Wethers at £83.50 from David Torr of Thorpe; Mule Wethers from Ben Shaw of Parwich up to £96; Horned lambs from David Naylor of Glossop at £94. Oxford lambs up to £103 from R & M Phillips & Sons of Buxton.

Breeding Sheep (158);
Many not being able to make it because of the weather but a solid trade throughout for what was on offer. A small selection of rams forward sold to £260 for a Texel Shearling Ram and £235 and £200 for Texel aged rams from S Frith, Thorpe. A Charollais shearling ram made £210 for R & L Vernon, Rocester.

Ewe lambs were a very strong trade, with a run of three pens of Texels from Jeff Turner, Okeover realising £182 and £165 twice. A pen of Texels made £150 and £130 for Alan Hayes, Alstonefield, and £120 for ACA & TJ Ede, Stramshall and £109 for S F Wright, Ipstones.

Ewes sold up to £100 for Texels (Correct Underneath) from G Sidebottom, who also sold Mules at £83. A pen of 8 from Ray Salt being correct under sold for £82.

Stronger grazing ewes being Texel or Mules generally £50 – £70 and plainer, horned ewes £30 – £45.
