Store Cattle Sale Report 18th March 2023

An entry of 553 Store and Breeding cattle were on offer with trade very similar to a fortnight ago with plenty of buyers in attendance for all categories of stock.

Breeding Section
There was a shortage of quality cows with calves at foot with a Holstein cow with a Blue bull calf at foot from Messrs Baskerville of Lichfield was well sold at £1530. A Hereford heifer with a young Hereford heifer calf at foot from Mick Harrison of Whiston selling for £1180 and three outfits from Dave Benbow of Eccleshall all being Angus and Hereford heifers with young Limousin calves at foot, exchanging hands for £1,000 with a Longhorn cow with a Longhorn heifer calf at foot from the same vendor at £1000 also.

An entry from H M Deaville & Son of Doveridge, being suckler cows having run with the bull topped at £1090 for a Hereford with another Hereford at £1060 and others at £990.

Young Bulls
In the young bull section a 14 month old Simmental bull from Mr Goddard of Chinley sold for £930 with British Blue bulls at 16 and 17 months old from Hallen Farming topping at £790 and a 7 month old British Blue bull from Graham Ruscoe of Crewe at £645.

Other British Blue bulls at 7 months of age from Arthur Mayer & Family sold for £630.

Overall average for young bulls was £485.

Steers
There were 251 steers on offer with the top price being £1680 for a 26 month old Limousin from Messrs Done of Bosley with another 25 month old Limousin from the same farmer at £1575 and a pair of 18 month old Limousin from Messrs Ratcliffe of Rodsley at £1305.

Angus steers from Messrs Done of Bosley at 25 months of age topped at £1645 with others at £1600 at 26 months of age and 21 month old Angus from A Turnock & Sons of Horton at £1600. A 20 month old Angus from the same vendor sold for £1450.

Charolais steers from Geoff Goodwin of Wetley Rocks at 19 months of age topped at £1530 with another similar aged beast from the same vendor at £1495 and a third 19 month old Charolais at £1295 again from Messrs Goodwin.

Simmental steers at 21 months of age from Ipstones sold up to £1420 with British Blue steers from Messrs Ratcliffe of Rodsley at 17 months of age selling for £1285 and Hereford steers up to £1485 for a 24 month old steer from Messrs Done of Bosley with a bunch of 4, 16 month old Herefords from E Cookson & Partners at £1265.

Montbeliarde steers from Messrs Shann of Sheen at 22 months of age sold for £1145 with Longhorn steers at 28 months of age up to £1130.

Younger cattle included a pair of 10 month old Limousin’s from Des Alcock of Elkstones selling for £1090 and 4, 10 month old British Blue selling for £1080 from Robert Flower and 3 Limousin’s at 12 months of age from Messrs Bailey of Grindon at £1065.

Overall average achieved for steers was £924.46.

Heifers
There were 242 heifers on offer with the top price being £1390 for a pair of British Blue 25 month old heifers from Beryl Kirkham of Leek with a single 27 month old British Blue from Cynthia Carnwell of Kingsley Moor at £1305 and a pair of 28 month old British Blues from the same vendor at £1190.

A bunch of 3 Charolais at 23 months of age from Messrs Hunter of Quarnford sold for £1385 with Herefords up to £1295 for a 29 month old heifer from Jane Clowes of Ipstones and Angus up to £1295 also for a 26 month old Angus from W A Durose & Sons of Stanton with Messrs Beech of Milton selling 25 month old Angus up to £1245.

A bunch of 5, 23 month old Limousin’s heifers from W D & H M Seabridge of Barlaston exchanged hands for £1220 with Simmentals at 20 months of age up to £1085 from Ian Barks of Blackshaw Moor.

Longhorn heifers at 26 months of age from Anders Agriculture Ltd of Roston sold for £980. Younger cattle topped at £885 for a pair of 11 month old Limousin’s from Messrs Bailey of Grindon and 3 Blonde heifers at 10 months of age from Tom James of Eccleshall selling for £850.

Overall average achieved for heifers was £779.61.
