There was 567 store and breeding cattle on offer with a very strong trade for the stronger cattle which were near to finishing and also for quality younger sorts with plenty of buyers in attendance.
Breeding Section
Suckler cows and calves were a firmer trade than a fortnight ago with a top price of £1580 for a Limousin cow from JD & MR Bradbury of Ipstones with a Limousin heifer calf at foot approximately 8 months old with the cow having run back to the Limousin bull.
A Pedigree Angus cow with a young Angus bull calf at foot from Messrs Griffin of Alstonefield sold at £1340 with a heifer calf at foot at £1220. In-calf suckler heifers from Stuart Potts of Gillow Heath created a good demand with the top price being £1320 for a 28 month old British Blue being PD’d in calf to the Hereford with other similar beasts at £1280 and £1240.
J D Edge & Son from Eccleshall sold a British Blue cow with a stabiliser bull calf at foot for £1290. Other In calf cows from Messrs Woodfield of Market Drayton up to £1180 and £1150.
Young Bulls
There was a shortage of quality young bulls, with a 15 month old Hereford from Howard Beswick exchanging hands for £1110 and a 12 month old Simmental from S Driver of Glossop up to £865 with a 15 month old Limousin from D J Latchford of Abbots Bromley at £925.
Steers
There were 278 steers on offer with the top price being £1575 for a 27 month old British Blue from Mrs Julie Mees of Stone, with other British Blues up to £1405 for a bunch of 3, 25 months old from JG Curtis & Sons of Basford with another bunch from the same vendor of similar age at £1400 and a single 32 month old British Blue from J E White of Sheffield at £1325.
A 23 month old British Blue from Rob and Andy Williamson of Wetley Rocks sold for £1235.
Limousin steers at 23 months of age from J G Curtis & Sons of Basford sold up to £1485 with a 24 month old Limousin from the same vendor at £1420 and a 21 month old Limousin from J L Mellor & Partners of Macclesfield at £1340 and a pair from J Gilman & Partners of Bosley at 28 months of age at £1295.
Simmental steers topped at £1350 for a bunch of 3, 19 month old Simmentals from J B Proudlove of Congleton with a 16 month old Simmental steer from the same vendor at £1285.
Hereford steers from J & I Knight of Horton at 25 months of age sold up to £1315 with a pair of 17 month old Herefords from Messrs Gould of Middlewich at £1260 and a single 24 month old Hereford from J L Mellor & Partners of Macclesfield at £1205.
South Devon steers from Keith and Alison Wilton of Buxton were well sold at £1285 at 17 months of age with Angus up to £1160 for a 13 month old steer from Adrian Swinnerton of Lichfield with another 31 month old Angus from the same vendor at £1145.
Montbeliarde steers from Anders Agriculture of Roston topped at £1090 for a bunch of 4,18 month olds with Friesian steers up to £1045 for a pair of 21 month old steers from Rob and Andy Williamson. A Fleckvieh steer from Rushton Spencer at 18 months of age achieved £1040 with a Swedish Red Steer at 16 months of age from Messrs Petford of Tamworth at £935 and a Blonde steer from Geoff Forrester of Abbots Bromley at 15 months of age exchanging hands for £930.
An 11 month old Charolais from A & H Etches of Earl Sterndale sold for £850 with a bunch of 3, 13 month old Shorthorns from Mary Rowlinson of Cotton at £820 and a bunch of 3, 14 month old South Devons from the same vendor at £780.
Overall average achieved for steers was a pleasing £887.23.
Heifers
There were 203 heifers on offer with a top price being £1265 paid for a 24 month old Blonde heifer from Jason Jervis of Cheadle with another Blonde heifer at 22 months of age from the same vendor at £1160.
A British Blue heifer from J G Curtis & Sons at 24 months of age was well sold at £1235 with a bunch of 4, 20 month old British Blue heifers from Rob and Andy Williamson at £1215 and a pair of 26 month old British Blues from Adrian Swinnerton of Lichfield at £1180 and a single 28 month old British Blue heifer from J E White of Sheffield selling well at £1170.
Simmentals topped at £1170 from Ann Beech of Milton at 25 months old with another bunch of 4, 23 month old Simmentals from K W Dakin & Son of Macclesfield at £1130.
Angus heifers from B J Archer at 22 months of age sold for £1130 with Hereford heifers up to £1120 for a pair of 17 month old from Messrs Gould of Middlewich and Charolais up to £1105 for a 25 month old beast from J & I Knight of Horton.
2 South Devon heifers were well sold from Keith and Alison Wilton of Buxton at £1080 with a 20 month old Friesian from B J Archer of Hilton at £1060.
A Shorthorn heifer from Oakwood Farm Estates Limited of Glossop exchanged hands for £1100.
Younger cattle sold up to £765 for 13 month old Shorthorn from SJ Hawkins of Middleton by Youlgreave with a bunch of 3, 13 month old Angus from C Blockley of Altringham at £750 and an 11 month old Simmental heifer from K Nash of Chapel en le Frith at £705.
Overall average achieved for heifers was £724.45.
