Market Report 18th May

A good entry of dairies forward for the monthly Pedigree Dairy sale with heifers up to £2300 and £2130 with numerous over £1800. Young stock were well sought after with 8 month old heifers to £660.
A drop in numbers in the sheep shed, mainly down to the time of years and hogg numbers drying up. An excellent trade, in particular for those top quality sorts selling to 440p/kg and £191.16 per head. Hoggs sold to 342p/kg, and ewes up to £156.
Barren cows were a solid enquiry with top price of 159p/kg twice, and averaged 126p/kg overall. Top headage price of £1240.20.
A much improved trade for fat pigs, with more buyers forward, with top prices of 149p/kg for bacon pigs and 148p/kg for cutters.
Plenty of demand for calves once again with returning buyers looking for stock. Top price of £405 for fresh Blue calves and heifers to £350.

A good entry forward, and an excellent trade achieved with a ringside full of buyers. Top price of 159p/kg twice for a 780kg British Blue from DA & LM Moss, Rushton Spencer, and also for a 720kg Limousin from S B Mellor & Son, Winkhill.
Black & white’s sold up to 156p/kg for a 730kg Holstein from Chris Ball, Fulford, and 150p/kg for a 740kg Friesian from F J Gould & Son, Longnor.

There was certainly something for everybody in the dairy shed on Tuesday both in the variation of breeds on offer along with the various categories of dairies alongside the milkers which included In-calf heifers, bullers, yearlings and calves.
The day started with two lovely Dairy Shorthorn calves from the Broadlane herd of Gary Norbury which reached £310 and £260 respectively.
Milkers were a solid trade with trade topping at £2300 for a really stylish ABS Theory daughter from the Alsopdale herd of Andrew and Joanna Bunting.
Andrew Weston of Litton saw his Goodwhone daughter make £2130 and Andrew Broadley of New Haven watched his red and white heifer reach £2000. Plenty of others were in the £1800-£2000 bracket.
Another entry of youngstock from the Havendale Herd of the Flower family were much sought after with 8 month old heifers to £660 and calves to £580.
A beauty of a Hereford Bull from Geoff Goodwin of Wetley Rocks reached £1900.

A reduced entry this Tuesday which had a positive effect of this weeks trade, with averages up 20p – 30p on the week.
Cutting pigs sold up to 148p/kg for 80.7kg pigs from J & B Fentem who sold others at 146p/kg, 110p/kg and 108p/kg, with a trio of 84kg pigs at 112p/kg from PF & PD Parsons, Whitchurch.
Bacon pigs sold up to 149p/kg twice for 94kg and 98kg pigs from J & B Fentem, who also sold 101kg pigs at 146p/kg. a pair of 95kg pigs made 144p/kg for D H Poulson, Llangadog, with a pair of 98kg pigs at 141p/kg from S Bailey, Biddulph and the Parsons selling bacon pigs at 140p/kg, 138p/kg and 139p/kg.
Heavier pigs topped at 140p/kg for 106kg pigs from J & B Fentem, with a pair of 106kg pigs at 116p/kg from J W Bailey, Cloudside. 114p/kg for 106kg pigs from J & B Fentem and 110p/kg for a 153kg pig from P Kelsall.
Cull sows sold up to 64p/kg for a 238kg sow from J & B Fentem, who also sold a 214kg sow at 54p/kg. A run of sows from P & N Allen made 63p/kg, 60p/kg, 56p/kg and 50p/kg.

Modest numbers forward in all sections of the sheep shed, as is being experienced everywhere. Trade is generally steady away, but we experienced a strong demand for the best sorts and many many more could have been sold. Best lambs to 440p/kg or £191.16/head!!

Seasonal entry with plenty of atmosphere! Trade a little back on recent weeks but still buoyant.
Reg Critchlow selling ewes to £156/head with heavy ewes generally £110 – £130. Best Suffolks to £118 and best Mules towards £100. The overall average of £85 represented the mixed quality rather than the trade.

A few ewes and lambs selling on a fair trade topping at £182 for older ewes with doubles.

The trade marches on again and a good line up of buyers looking for numbers.

Just look at the averages, this includes all shapes, breeds and ages and many more could have been sold without effecting the trade. Two strong Simmental’s (10 weeks) sold at £440 a piece with fresh Blues to £405 and 6 smaller bulls under £300.
