An excellent show of Dairy cattle forward for the monthly Pedigree Sale and some superb prices achieved, up to £2980 for cows, and heifers to £2680.
More barren cattle forward this Tuesday, but a shortage of well fed beef types. Top price of 199p/kg for a Beef Shorthorn and a lack of clean cattle, saw a top price of 203p/kg.
Plenty of lambs forward, and trade took a step back this week, with lambs generally 10 – 20p less, being a similar story to many other outlets. Top price of 264p/kg for the best quality and heavy lambs to £142.80. Cull ewes in good demand saw the best meated types to £164.
The calf section saw an improved trade, with Blue Bull calves selling well, up to £330 and Blue heifers to £300.
A mixed quality entry of pigs saw a mixed trade, with the best quality selling to 178p/kg twice.

A small entry lacked butchers cattle, saw a 475kg British Blue heifer at 203p/kg for Reg Critchlow Grindon and 196p/kg for a 570kg Angus from the same home.

A superb second calver from the Broomhouse Herd of Messrs Easom topped a very big day at Leek on Tuesday for £2980. By Flowrider, she had given 8008kg as a heifer. Sold giving 36kg she went to Andrew Hulme of Basford.
The Easom’s saw their other second calver also by Flowrider reach £2720 to the Bradbury family of Earl Sterndale.
Cows were in strong demand with a second calver from the Meldamar Herd of Messrs Shepherd of Bakewell making £2700 to Messrs Sims of Ashbourne.
Heifers topped at £2680 for a Nacash daughter from the Weston family of Roston. She went to L Neville of Matlock.
Ayrshires from the Alkmonton Herd of Messrs Harris topped at £2020 for a second calver, heading to Messrs Sellors of Grangemill with Shorthorns from Shirley Kirkham reaching £1900.
In-calf heifers from Notts Uni reached £1740.
A tremendous day, thanks to both vendors and purchasers.

A few less in with more plainer sorts about which is reflected in the averages. Pork pigs sold up to 166p/kg for a pair of 75kg pigs from J & B Fentem, who also sold a pen for 147p/kg. 147p/kg for 75kg pigs from M R Banham, Bromsgrove.
Cutters sold up to 178p/kg for an 82kg pig from S Bailey Biddulph, with the Fentem’s selling a run at 166p/kg (x3), 165p/kg, 163p/kg, 149p/kg and 148p/kg.
Bacon pigs sold up to 178p/kg for a 95kg from S Bailey, with 168p/kg for 93kg and 94kg pigs from Massie Farms, Stafford, who sold some others at 166p/kg, 165p/kg (x2). 167p/kg for 94kg pigs from J & B Fentem.
More sows about this week and topping at 66p/kg for a run of five from S Richardson, Barnsley and 66p/kg for a 364kg sow from G W Myatt & Partners, Gratton, who also had another two at 65p/kg and 64p/kg for sows from MC & EA Beattie, Allostock.
A pen of 11 store pigs (19kg) sold for £16 per head from T Chambers, Redditch.

An increased entry saw a steadier trade, in line with other centres on the same day. It seems the lift in trade the previous week was too much too quick and has impacted on demand. Nevertheless, a competitive trade throughout, and prices generally back to the levels of two weeks ago.
Best up to 264p/kg and plenty at 250p/kg plus. Big lambs again well bid for, up to £142.80/head or 239p/kg.
34-41kg lambs best sold on the day for the quality on offer, to average 236p/kg.
Overall average of 234.2p/kg and £100/head.
