It was busy day at Leek Market with 664 store and breeding cattle entered and a firm trade was experienced in all sections, particularly for the stronger cattle which were close to finishing.
Breeding Section
An entry from Sam Allcock of Waterhouses saw a Limousin cow with a young Limousin heifer calf at foot sold for £1320 with a Simmental cow with a Limousin bull calf at foot at £1290. An entry from John Hudson of Ipstones sold up to £1140 for a Limousin cow with a Simmental bull calf at foot with other entries of a Hereford cow with a Simmental bull calf at foot at £1110.
A Hereford pedigree cow from R & SE Poole of Winkhill with a Hereford male calf at foot with the cow having run back to the Hereford bull exchanged hands for £1290. Another Hereford cow with a Hereford male calf at foot from AE & K Simpson of Winkhill exchanged hands for £1130 with S Kidd Farmers of Longnor selling a Simmental cow with a Charolais bull calf at foot up to £1190.
In calf heifers from John Harper of Ipstones Edge achieved up to £990 for a Friesian X with a Simmental X at £950.
Stock Bulls
There was one stock bull on offer being a 38 month old Angus from Ian Harrison of Whiston which sold for £870.
Young Bulls
Young bulls of which there were 23 sold up to £960 for a pair of 15 month old Saler from Rosie Watson of Fenny Bentley with a 19 month old Simmental from Mark Ratcliffe at £840, a pair of 6 month old Limousins from FW Kirkham of King Sterndale at £720 to produce an average of £633.64.
Steers
There were 314 steers on offer with a top price being £1490 for a bunch of 4, 21 month old Limousins from Colin Lymer of Cheddleton with a single 28 month old Limousin at £1485 from A Slater & Sons of Mayfield and a single 18 month old Limousin from D Oliver of Chelford at £1390. Another pair of 19 month old Limousins from the same vendor sold for £1300 and a single 16 month old from Robert and Andy Williamson of Wetley Rocks at £1290.
A 27 month old Simmental from Old Hall Farm Partners of Betley sold at £1475 with another bunch of 3, 22 month old Simmentals from Robertson and Partners of Lower Withington at £1300 and a single 18 month old Simmental at £1290 from D Oliver of Chelford.
British Blue steers from D & F Mycock of Cauldon at 23 months old up to £1370 with a 24 month old British Blue from Robertson & Partners at £1355 and a pair of 23 month old British Blues from Beryl Kirkham of Leek at £1345. A single 20 month old British Blue from J A Clowes & Sons of Ashbourne exchanged hands for £1300 and a pair of 23 month old British Blues from Beryl Kirkham at £1290.
Angus Steers from J & A Worthington of Welsh Row at 17 months of age sold up to £1270 with an 18 month old Short Horn from John Barber of Quarnford at £1265 and a 27 month old Hereford from Chris Atkin of Eccleshall at £1245.
Another bunch of 5, 23 month old Herefords of Robinson & Partners sold for £1200 and a 14 month old Charolais from Robert and Andy Williamson of Wetley Rocks at £1200.
Overall average achieved for steers was £852.49.
Heifers
There were 290 heifers on offer with a top price being £1300 paid for a 17 month old Charolais from Ross Worthington of Edale with another 16 month old Charolais from the same home at £1150. A 25 month old British Blue heifer from Chris Atkin of Eccleshall was well sold at £1300 with a pair of 28 month old British Blues from the same vendor at £1270.
A pair of 18 month old Limousin heifers from Colin Lymer of Cheddleton exchanged hands for £1285 with a single 19 month old Limousin from R Parker of Upper Hulme at £1270.
A bunch of 4, 25 month old Long Horn heifers from Reg Potter of Yeaveley were well sold at £1255 with a bunch of 3, 18 month old Hereford Heifers from George Norbury & Family of Chelford at £1150.
A bunch of 3, 18 month Simmental heifers from D Oliver of Chelford sold for £1100 and another bunch of 4, Hereford heifers from Graham Vickers at 19 months of age up to £1045.
Overall average for heifers was £811.62.
