Store Cattle Sale Report 3rd December 2022

A total entry of 516 store and breeding cattle were on offer with trade for the best quality still firm although some second quality and smaller sorts were a steadier trade in keeping with the national trends for the time of the year.

Breeding Section
In the breeding section, a shorthorn cow with a Limousin male calf at foot from Messrs Hinchcliffe of Chapel en le Frith was bid for keenly and sold for £1445 with a Hereford cow with a Hereford male calf at foot from Mr J Wood of Cliff Farm exchanging hands for £1230.

A young pedigree Hereford bull from Messrs Phillips of Winkhill achieved £1280.

Young Bulls
There was mixed quality on offer, with a pair of 18 month old Limousin from J L Mellor & Partners of Sutton at £920 with a pair of 12 month old from the same vendor at £880 and another pair at a similar age at £810.

Overall average was £593.24

Steers
There were 229 steers on offer with a top price being £1270 for a bunch of 4, 18 month old Charolais from John Barber of Quarnford with another pair of 18 month old Charolais from the same vendor at £1190 and a single 19 month old Charolais from Ross Worthington of Edale at £1150.

A pair of 13 month old Hereford steers from Gavin Peach of Warslow achieved £1225 with a single 20 month old Hereford steer from Mark Jervis of Whiston at £1150. A bunch of 3, 19 month old South Devon steers from Keith and Alison Wilton of Fairfield were bid for keenly at £1200 with Angus at 19 months of age up to £1160 from John Barber of Quarnford and a pair of 14 month old Simmentals selling particularly well from J Gould & Son of Whiston Shaw Farm at £1160.

A single 20 month old Longhorn steer from Reg Potter & Family of Yeaveley achieved £1105 with 5 British Blue steers at 20 months of age from Messrs Potts of Astbury at £1090.

Young cattle achieved up to £985 for 11 month old British Blue steer from Graham Jones of Langley with a bunch of 4, 8 month old Limousin steers from Alan Hayes of Alstonefield at £880 and an 11 month old British Blue steer from Graham Jones at £875.

The overall average achieved for steers was £717.49 including a good number of smaller types.

Heifers
There were 262 heifers on offer with a quality beast from DJ Boulton & Son of Lane End Farm at 13 months of age achieving £1430 with another 13 month old Limousin heifer from the same vendor at £1300 and a 26 month old Limousin again from the same vendor at £1245.

Hereford heifers from Albert Chaddock of Gillow Heath topped at £1100 with a single 19 month old Hereford heifer from Ian Wilson and Family at £1030 and a pair of 19 month old British Blue heifers from C W Pearce & Partners of Draycott at £1090.

A single 20 month old Blonde heifer from the same vendors sold for £1085 with Charolais heifers up to £1040 for 18 month old cattle from John Barber of Quarnford.

A bunch of 3, 20 month old South Devon heifers from Keith and Alison Wilton of Fairfield sold for £1015 with Blonde heifers up to 21 months of age at £1005 from Robert Frith of Ilam.

Younger cattle sold up to £805 for a 8 month old Limousin heifer from Alan Hayes of Quarnford.

Overall average for heifers was £629.51.
