Market Report Tuesday 18th April

A busy Tuesday with 233 cattle and 1683 sheep forward. Another superb entry of sheep this week and trade on fire! Hoggs to 378p/kg, Ewes to £251 and Spring Lambs to 442p/kg.

The pedigree dairy sale saw a good entry sell up to £2740 for fresh heifers.

A good entry of barren cattle sold on a strong trade, with the best to 226p/kg and 224p/kg to gross £1971.20.

Quality pigs in demand with 137 forward and topping at 216p/kg for bacon pigs, and sows to 80p/kg.

A good number of calves forward but short on quality. Good calves selling up to £395 for Simmental bull calves.

A very strong trade for cattle this week and some good prices achieved. Top price of 226p/kg for a 850kg Limousin from A Sayer, Stone, who also sold a 880kg Limousin for 224p/kg.

A 540kg Friesian sold for 217p/kg from J & L Macpherson, Yoxall. Simmentals sold up to 208p/kg for a 830kg cow from A J Peach, Warslow and a 565kg Simmental at 196p/kg for EB & BM Sutton, Moreton.

Top headage price of £1971.20 and £1921 for Limousin cows from A Sayer, with Simmentals to £1726.40, Herefords to £1610.20 and Friesians to £1513.40.

A 780kg Hereford OTM steer sold for 235p/kg from Home Farm, Rushton Spencer.

DAIRIES (37);

Pedigree week and a smaller entry but the trade good with a top of £2740 and 11 cattle £2000 and above.

Some smart runs of cattle from regular vendors and probably more cattle could have been well sold to vendors advantage.

Brian Needham topped the catalogued sale at £2740 with a very robust strong heifer giving 39kg to Andrew Hulme at Basford with Briggs entry of 4 heifers averaging on an excellent £2510.

Strong milky cows giving 40kg and above good to sell between £1800 and £2000 for both the Needham’s and the Bradburn family from Wigan.

Several local and regional purchases out for top end cattle but left with entry trailers as the best were just beyond their reach.

The commercial entry topped at £2360 for Andrew Mills for a newly calved heifer giving 28kg with cows from the Richardson family at Plumley, Cheshire topping the fresh commercial cows at £1630.

PIGS (137);

Another strong entry with 137 head forward. Fats to 216p/kg and sows to 80p/kg.

Porkers
Porkers in demand a few plainer sorts harder to place but none the less the bets sorts in demand topping at 194p/kg for 78kg pigs from J&B Fentem, Allsop En-Le Dale. JA&B Minshull, Buxton saw a 68kg pig to 191p/kg. JR Mosedale, Longford has 67kg pigs to 183p/kg.

Cutting Pigs
Cutters in demand topping at 208p/kg for an 84kg gilt from S Bailey, Knypersley. PF&PD Parsons, Whitchurch had an 82kg pig to 199p/kg. J&B Fentem, Allsop En-Le Dale had a run to 198p/kg, 195p/kg, 194p/kg & 192p/kg.

Bacon Pigs
Baconers were the order of the day topping at 216p/kg for 88kg gilts from DB Goldstraw Meerbrook, others from the same home realised 214p/kg for 93kg pigs. Massie Farms, Stafford saw 201p/kg for 94kg pigs. JG Belfield also saw 201p/kg for 97kg pigs and MC&E Beattie, Allstock saw 200p/kg for 93kg pigs.

Heavy Pigs
Just the one heavy pig realised 174p/kg for a 110kg boar from PJ Barker, Charnwood. A 160kg clean gilt realised 126p/kg for MC&E Beattie

Cull Sow
More cull sows on offer this week topping at 80p/kg for a 329kg sow from MC&E Beattie, who had others to 76p/kg & 70p/kg. R Rowlinson, Ramshorn had a 306kg sow to 78p/kg.

SPRING LAMBS (26);
Spring lambs met a good enquiry and a shame we didn’t have more forward. Top price of 442p/kg for 37kg lambs from IE, M & A Wilson, Hollington who also sold 40.5kg lambs at 440p/kg and 43kg lambs for 425p/kg.

3 pens from AW & RA Mycock, Flagg sold for 440p/kg for 35kg and 34kg lambs. A single 43kg lamb sold for 432p/kg from Mary Cawser, Draycott.

HOGGETS (1175);
An excellent entry of hogget’s and some super quality forward. An excellent trade with the whole entry averaging 317.98p/kg and SQQ average of 330.46p/kg.

Top price of 378p/kg for 40kg lambs from J Belfield & R Deakin-Gallimore and top headage price of £207.90.

An excellent entry of cull sheep and trade on fire one again, with the whole entry averaging £132.02 for ewes and rams averaging £144.61.

Good numbers of calves and a big audience of potential buyers this week. Good calves few and far between with a couple of big runs of smaller, younger calves on offer with do nothing to enhance the averages.

37 Continental Bulls
Good calves are good to sell with the top 7 over £315 and a top price of £395 for a superb Simmy bull from Messrs Higginson, Knutsford. Medium bulls £200 – £285 with plenty of younger types under £100.

53 Continental Heifers
The same story as the bulls with the bigger sorts £220 and above with good hard bidding. Younger sorts whilst there is still plenty of interest only command the lower prices. The tremendous run of Simms from Messrs Higginson topped at £295 and £285. Medium heifers £120 – £200 with smaller sorts less.
