Market Report Tuesday 21st January

A busy day in the dairy shed today with the Pedigree sale in full swing, seeing a top price of £3450 and an average of £2257 for milkers.

The calf shed was thriving again with 122 on offer and a trade well on par with last week if not surpassing it. A British Blue bull sold to an incredible £530 and British Blue also topped the day in the heifers at £358.

Strong trade in the pig shed with a few more on offer than last week, reaching a top of 200p/kg for fat pigs.

Best lambs topped at 370p/kg with plenty more in the 340p – 360p/kg range. Top headage price of the day was £185.26/head.

More ewes around this week with a top price of £220 and Tups selling up to £250/head.

Very similar number and trade to last week, selling on a strong trade with a good company of buyers around the ring.

Topping the day was a Montbeliarde cow, weighing 625kg, selling to 185p/kg to top at £1156.25/head for D & EA Jeffery of Roston, close behind was a cross bred cow weighing 745kg, which sold to 180p/kg for WG & J Clark of Bradnop, which also took the top headage price of the day at £1341.

A Simmental cow, weighing 560kg for D & EA Jeffery sold to 178p/kg, to top at £996.80/head.

Holstein topped at 177p/kg for a 695kg cow for GW & MA Hicklin of Onecote and 177p also, for a 590kg cow for Pearson & Son of Macclesfield.

An Ayrshire cow sold to 176p/kg for WG & J Clark of Bradnop, weighing 675kg and a Hereford cow at 660kg sold to 173p/kg to a top of £1141.80/head.

A Friesian overage steer, weighing 495kg, sold up to 218p/kg to top at £1079.10/head and a Hereford steer, weighing 655kg sold to 186p/kg for D & EA Jefffery.

Overall average was 165.27p/kg.

CLEAN CATTLE
A small entry this week, seeing young Friesian bulls to 248p/kg, weighing 490kg, to a top price of £1215.20/head for JE Archer & Sons of Hilton with another at 460kg selling to 239p/kg from the same vendor.

A blistering trade to start the New Year off at Leek with heifers reaching £3450, £3300 and £3250, achieving an overall average of £2258.
Topping the day was a Tirsvad K & L Mingus daughter from the Stubbs family of Tissington. Giving 31kg she was clinched by Andrew Hulme of Basford who also went on to take a Seagull-Bay-MJ Applejax from the Needham family of Rushton Spencer at £3300.

Hot in pursuit at £3250 was a heifer by Donte from the Shieldhouse herd of Messrs Weston. She went to the Gordon family of Leigh.

Cows reached £2700 for a second calver by Denovo Citizen from Messrs Easom, heading to Richard Moss of Yarlet.

Trade was on fire throughout for all milkers with youngstock also making good money to £1060.

Another consistent entry saw a slightly easier trade, in line with elsewhere but meat still very good to sell.

Best topped at 370p/kg and plenty at 340p – 360p/kg. More commercial and feeding lambs in the entry but well bid for throughout.

Best big lambs at 341p/kg or £185.26/head and heavy lambs average £157/head.

Overall average at 325p/kg or £141/head.

More best shaped, well finished lambs could be sold.
